Location and Introduction : A Hilltop Sanctuary Where History Meets Wilderness

Deep in the wilderness of South Luangwa National Park, where the Luangwa River carves its path through untouched Africa, Chichele Presidential Lodge stands as a bridge between Zambia's proud history and its breathtaking natural heritage. More than just a luxury safari lodge, Chichele is a living museum, a wildlife paradise, and a testament to refined hospitality - all woven together into an experience that lingers in the soul long after departure.

Crowning the scenic President Hill in South Luangwa National Park, Chichele Presidential Lodge commands breathtaking views where the Luangwa River curves toward the escarpment. This storied retreat began its life in 1972 as the personal safari haven of Zambia's founding president, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, where he would escape state affairs to immerse himself in the wild beauty of the Luangwa Valley. After years as a national treasure under the management of National Hotels, the lodge underwent a magnificent rebirth in 2001 when private owners painstakingly restored its faded grandeur while preserving its presidential legacy.

The lodge's hilltop perch offers an ever-changing panorama of Zambia's most celebrated wilderness. From this elevated vantage point, guests watch golden sunrises paint the Miombo woodlands, observe elephants meandering through Mopane glades, and witness the Luangwa's waters shimmer under the African sun. The varied terrain - from gravel patches to black-cotton soils - creates a mosaic of habitats that attract an extraordinary concentration of wildlife right to the lodge's doorstep.

Ten exquisitely appointed suites blend Victorian elegance with modern safari comfort. Each airy sanctuary features tall French windows that frame the wilderness like living paintings, while inside, plush four-poster beds dressed in crisp linens promise royal slumber. The suites' private terraces become personal observatories where guests might spot a leopard padding along the riverbank or listen to the resonant calls of fish eagles echoing across the valley. The bathrooms transport guests to a bygone era with their clawfoot tubs and vintage pull-chain toilets, yet offer all the conveniences discerning travelers expect.

The common spaces pay elegant tribute to the lodge's heritage. A stately arched entrance leads to lounges where deep armchairs cluster around a crackling fireplace, inviting stories of the day's safari adventures. The grand dining room opens onto a sweeping veranda where meals are served with a side of unforgettable views. Everywhere, the lodge's design honors its presidential origins while cocooning guests in understated luxury.

What truly sets Chichele apart is this magical intersection of history and wilderness. Here, one can sip sundowners where a president once contemplated a nation's future, then wake to find elephants browsing outside their window. It's a place where Zambia's past and present flow together as gracefully as the Luangwa's waters, creating a safari experience that resonates long after the journey home.

Chichele Presidential & Puku Ridge are in close proximity so either of these are best combined with other camps in the South Luangwa National Park. Due to the remoteness of this area we recommend to our guest to fly in rather than drive by road. depending on where you are travelling from and to, these are the options to get to Chichele Presidential:

International travelers fly into Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital.
Alternatively, arrive via Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) in Livingstone if visiting Victoria Falls first. Then connect with a domestic flight to Mfuwe which takes no more than 1.5-hours. From here you will be met and picked up by the lodge staff for the final leg of the journey being a sort road transfer (approximately 2 hours) through the park to Chichele Presidential Lodge, with wildlife sightings en route.
Alternatively, a helicopter transfer can be arranged for a spectacular aerial view of the Luangwa Valley.

The Wildlife and Habitat of Chichele Presidential Lodge

The lodge's hilltop position overlooks a breathtaking tapestry of habitats that sustain an extraordinary diversity of animals, from prowling predators to towering elephants and over 400 bird species.

The lifeblood of this ecosystem, the meandering Luangwa River, shapes every aspect of the surrounding wilderness. Its seasonal floods create lush oxbow lagoons that attract thirsty herds during the dry season, while its sandy banks reveal the paw prints of leopards at dawn. The lodge's vantage point showcases this dynamic interplay between water and land - one moment revealing a parade of elephants crossing the river, the next exposing vast mudflats where crocodiles sunbathe.

Diverse vegetation zones radiate from the riverbanks. Towering ebony and mahogany trees give way to open grasslands where antelope graze, while the iconic sausage trees provide shade for lounging lions. Further inland, dense mopane woodlands shelter elusive species like the rare roan antelope, and the distinctive winterthorn forests - with their spreading canopies and nutritious pods - serve as a magnet for wildlife.

Chichele's location places guests in the midst of South Luangwa's legendary predator-prey drama. The area boasts one of Africa's highest densities of leopards, their golden coats frequently glimpsed draped over tree limbs at dusk. Lion prides, sometimes numbering over 20 strong, dominate the riverine territories, their roars echoing across the valley at night. Other frequent sights inlcude:

★ Thornicroft's giraffe, a unique subspecies found nowhere else on Earth
★ Wild dogs, whose thrilling pack hunts unfold on the open plains
★ Hundred-strong buffalo herds that darken the landscape when on the move

Birdlife reaches spectacular proportions here, from the electric blue flash of malachite kingfishers to the prehistoric silhouette of ground hornbills. The carmine bee-eater colonies (August-November) transform riverbanks into swirling clouds of crimson, while fish eagles provide the quintessential soundtrack of Africa with their haunting cries.

The changing seasons dramatically alter the landscape and wildlife viewing:

★ Dry season (May-October) concentrates animals along the river, offering unparalleled predator action
★ Emerald season (November-April) brings newborn animals, migratory birds, and a lush, green paradise

After dark, spotlights reveal a secret world of Genet cats slinking through the trees and Honey badgers on their fearless patrols.

This is wilderness at its most raw and beautiful - where every game drive, walk, or even moment on your private veranda brings intimate encounters with Africa's untamed heart. The habitat surrounding Chichele doesn't just host wildlife; it pulses with the ancient rhythms of predator and prey, flood and drought, life and survival.
